Tour Overview

Join us for an immersive historic walking tour through San Antonio’s Eastside, exploring the rich history of the Dignowity Hill and Denver Heights neighborhoods.

The tour begins at the Carver Community Cultural Center (“The Carver”), a landmark that has served as a hub for cultural exchange and performance arts for over a century. Originally built in 1918 as a community center for African American soldiers, The Carver remains a vital part of the city’s heritage.

Throughout the tour, we’ll visit key sites that shaped early 20th-century African American life in San Antonio, including former schools, churches, businesses, medical facilities, entertainment venues, private residences, and political organizations.

These neighborhoods were once home to a diverse mix of African American, German, Jewish, Irish, Polish, Mexican, Native American, and Chinese families, all contributing to the area’s cultural and economic growth from the early 1900s through the post-WWII era.
